Born in Mumbai in 1986, Sylvester Fonseca trained as a cinematographer at the prestigious Film and Television Institute of India (FTII).
His student film, ‘Open Cafe v2.5’ (2011) won him the ‘Most Promising Indian Cinematographer’ award at the Pune International Film Festival (PIFF) 2012 and the Silver at Cut.In Students’ Video Festival, Mumbai 2011. ‘Makara’ (2013), his Student Diploma film was premiered at 8th Rome Film Festival that year. Few of his other projects, ‘Man from Maldeo' (2012), ‘5 o’clock Accident’ (2013), Just Friends (2013) have won several awards and been screened as part of many film festivals.
Recently completed work includes ‘Island City’ a feature length film produced by National Film Development Corporation of India and directed by Ruchika Oberoi. The film will have it’s world premiere at the 72nd Venice International Film Festival as part of the Venice Days section where it won the 'FEDORA Award for best debutant Director'. It has also been screened at various other prestigious film festivals and is now awaiting release.
